Which charging cable should I get for my KIA e-Niro?

Looking for the right charging cable for your KIA e-Niro? It can be difficult to work out, but luckily EV Wired are here with the answer.

The KIA e-Niro has a CCS Type 2 charge port on the vehicle, just like the majority of modern electric vehicles, and requires a (16A or 32A) Type 2 to Type 2 charging cable.

The seven-pin Type 2 is the standard design within the EU and can be used at virtually all public charge points within the UK (certain Tesla-specific charge points are the exception). As mentioned, Type 2 is a seven-pin design, but you may notice two larger pins at the bottom of the charge cable inlet on your vehicle. Don’t worry, this is just for DC rapid charging cables, which you’ll find tethered to some charge points around the country. If you happen to come across any of these DC rapid chargers, don’t be afraid to give your vehicle an even quicker charge.

The KIA e-Niro’s charge rate maxes out at 7.2kW if charging via a 32A (Amps) single-phase supply (the standard within UK homes), or 11kW if charging using a 16A 3-phase supply. (3-phase energy supplies are commonly found at public buildings, service stations, supermarkets etc.)

It may sound confusing working out whether you’re charging at 16A or 32A, but don’t worry – regardless of the energy supply and charger cable your vehicle will automatically charge at the optimal rate. For instance, the same EV Wired 32A cable can be used at both 16A and 32A charge points, and the same goes for our 16A cables. Just bear in mind that if the energy source is 16A or if your cable is 16A, your vehicle will charge at this slower rate.

Most houses and homes within the UK use a single-phase electricity supply, meaning that only a single-phase 32A cable is generally required for home charging. A 32A 3-phase charger cable, however, is a terrific option to keep in the car boot, as it allows for speedy charging at public 3-phase charge stations and has the bonus of being more future-proof as 32A charge points become increasingly common.
