Charging Your Tesla EV from Home

Charging Your Tesla EV from Home

Why Home Charging Makes Sense for Tesla Drivers

Driving a Tesla comes with plenty of perks: impressive range, sleek design, and zero tailpipe emissions. But the real magic? Waking up to a fully charged car every morning.

Home EV charging is the most convenient and cost-effective way to power your Tesla. Whether you're a new Model 3 owner or upgrading to a Model Y, installing a dedicated home EV charger will maximise your Tesla’s performance while saving time and money.

Can I Charge My Tesla at Home in the UK?

Yes, and you’ve got two main options:

1. Using a Standard 3-Pin Plug

  • Connect via Tesla’s Mobile Connector with a 3-pin UK plug.

  • Charging speed: 8-10 miles of range per hour.

  • Ideal for occasional or emergency use.

2. Installing a Dedicated Home Wall Box Charger

  • Faster, safer, and smarter charging solution.

  • Speeds up to 7.4kW (single-phase), or 22kW (three-phase).

  • Fully compatible with Type 2 charging cables, the standard for Tesla vehicles in the UK.

Recommended for all regular Tesla users.

Best Tesla-Compatible Chargers for Home Use

To get the most out of your Tesla EV at home, choose a smart wall box charger that’s:

  • Type 2 compatible.

  • OZEV-approved (for potential UK GOV grant eligibility).

  • WiFi or app-connected for remote scheduling.

  • Load-balanced to protect your home’s electrical system.

Popular options include:

  • Tesla Wall Connector (integrated with the Tesla app).

  • Myenergi Zappi (solar-compatible).

  • Ohme Home Pro (tariff-optimised).

  • Easee One (compact, stylish, and smart).

How Long Does It Take to Charge a Tesla at Home?

Charging time depends on the type of charger you’re using:

  • 3-Pin Plug (2.3kW): Around 24–30 hours for a full charge.

  • 7kW Wall Box (7.4kW): Typically 8–12 hours to fully charge.

  • 22kW Wall Box (up to 22kW): As fast as 5–8 hours for a full charge.

Times are based on charging a Tesla Model 3 Long Range. A 22kW charger requires a three-phase electricity supply, which is uncommon in UK homes.

How Much Does Home Charging Cost?

Charging at home is significantly cheaper than public options.

For instance, a Tesla Model 3 (75kWh battery) charging at an average UK electricity rate: would cost around 30p/kWh. This would mean that a full charge would cost around £22.50.

However, charging on off-peak EV tariffs (usually overnight) such as Octopus Go, can cost as little as 7.5p/kWh.

We recommended using smart charging to schedule overnight top-ups during the cheapest rates.

What Cable Do I Need to Charge a Tesla at Home?

All Tesla models sold in the UK use a Type 2 charging port for AC charging.

Recommended Cable:

  • Type 2 to Type 2 EV charging cable (male to female).

  • Power: 7kW (for most homes) or 22kW (if three-phase supported).

  • Length: Choose 5m, 7m, 10m or 15m, depending on your parking layout.

EVwired cables are 100% compatible with all Tesla models, weatherproof (IP55), and come with a free carry case and 5-year warranty.

Installation Tips & Costs

Installation Cost:

  • Installations usually range from around £800–£1200.

  • Complex jobs (longer cable runs, load balancing) may cost more.

Although the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) has ended for homeowners, renters and flat owners may still be eligible for a grant.
