EV Growth in the UK: Electric Car Sales Hit a New Record

The UK's transition to electric driving has reached another major milestone.

Almost 100,000 new battery electric vehicles (BEVs) were registered in September 2026, making it the strongest month on record for electric car registrations in the UK.

Preliminary figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show 99,201 new electric cars joined UK roads during September - an increase of 36.3% compared with September 2025. BEVs accounted for an impressive 28.3% of all new car registrations during the month.

In this guide, we'll discuss what's driving the rapid growth of the UK electric vehicle market, and what it means for drivers thinking about making the switch.

Why Are More UK Drivers Going Electric?

Several factors appear to be helping accelerate electric vehicle growth in the UK.

1. More Electric Cars to Choose From

The number of fully electric models available to UK motorists has more than doubled since 2023, with the SMMT reporting 178 BEV models on sale.

Drivers are no longer limited to a handful of expensive electric cars. The market now includes everything from compact city EVs and family SUVs, to executive cars, performance EVs, and electric vans.

2. EVs Are Becoming More Competitive

Competition between established and newer manufacturers is also increasing.

Greater model choice, manufacturer incentives, discounts, and government support all help contribute to September's record performance.

For drivers considering their first EV, this means more choice at different price points.

3. Private Demand Is Growing

Fleet customers remain hugely important to the UK new car market, but private demand is also strengthening.

Overall, private new-car registrations saw an increase of 13.9% in September, and fleet registrations grew by 9.6%, encouraging the transition towards electric.

More EVs Means More Demand for Convenient Charging

As the number of electric vehicles on UK roads increases, EV charging becomes an increasingly important part of everyday driving.

For drivers with off-street parking, home charging can make EV ownership particularly convenient. Plug in when you arrive home, schedule charging for overnight, and start the following morning with a fully charged car.

For many modern electric cars, this means using a Type 2 to Type 2 EV charging cable with a compatible untethered home wall-box charger.

A portable Type 2 cable can also be useful for:

  • Workplace EV chargers.
  • Destination chargers.
  • Public AC charging stations.

If you're buying your first electric car, it's worth checking whether a charging cable is included with the vehicle.

What Does the Record Mean for the UK EV Market?

September's figures show that electric cars are becoming an increasingly substantial part of the mainstream UK new car market.

The combination of almost 100,000 BEV registrations in a single month, more than 170 electric models available, and a year-to-date BEV share above a quarter of the market demonstrates how quickly the sector is developing.

However, affordability, convenient charging access, and the pace of consumer adoption will continue to influence how quickly the transition progresses.

For UK drivers, the direction is clear: there are more electric cars to choose from than ever before, and EVs are taking a growing share of new-car registrations.
