Which charging cable should I get for my Mercedes EQC?

Finding out the right charging cable for your Mercedes EQC can be confusing. Luckily, EV Wired has all the answers you'll need.

As with most new and recent electric vehicle models, the Mercedes EQC has a CCS Type 2 charge socket, thus requiring a (16A or 32A) Type 2 to Type 2 cable for general charging purposes.

A Type 2 plug is the 7-pin standard plug design for electric vehicles within Europe. This connector type can be used at the vast majority of (non-Tesla) public charging stations within the UK. On your vehicle's charge socket, you might also notice two larger pins beneath the standard Type 2's seven pins: these are for CCS rapid DC charging cables, which you'll find tethered to certain 3-phase charge points. Be sure to make the most of these tethered chargers when you come across them as they charge your vehicle at a remarkably fast speed!

The maximum charge rate of the Mercedes EQC is 7.2kW when charging via a 32A single-phase supply (the household standard), or 11kW if charging using a 16A 3-phase supply (the standard at service stations, larger buildings etc).

Whether you use a 16A or 32A cable, your vehicle charger's circuitry will automatically establish the correct charge rate. This means you can use an EV Wired 32A cable at both 16A and 32A charge points, or a 16A cable at 16A and 32A charge points – just remember that if either the cable or charge point is 16A then you'll be using the lower charge rate.

Since the great majority of households use a single-phase electricity supply, you will only necessarily need a single-phase 32A cable for charging at home. That said, a 32A 3-phase charger cable has a number of advantages, and can be used both at home and at public 3-phase charge points for a more rapid charge. And, as the number of 3-phase charging locations ever increases, this is also the more future-proof option.
