Which Charging Cable Should I Get for My Nissan EV?
If you own a Nissan Leaf, Ariya, or Townstar EV, having the right charging cable is essential for convenient, reliable charging at home and on the go. Nissan has been a pioneer in the UK’s EV market, and while its models vary in size and range, most later models rely on the same key charging setup: a Type 2 charging port for AC charging and a CCS (Combined Charging System) connector for rapid DC charging.

What Charging Connector Does a Nissan EV Use?
-
Type 1 (before 2018) or Type 2 port (after 2018) – standard in Europe for home, workplace, and public AC charging.
-
CCS connector – used for rapid DC charging (cables are tethered to the charger, so you don’t need to bring your own).
Older first-generation Nissan Leafs (pre-2018) use a CHAdeMO connector for rapid charging instead of CCS. AC charging, however, is still via a Type 1 or Type 2 cable depending on the year of the model.

Nissan EV Charging Speeds
Different Nissan EV models have slightly different charging capacities:
-
Nissan Leaf (2018 onwards): up to 6.6kW AC (single-phase).
-
Nissan Ariya: up to 7.4kW AC as standard, with optional 22kW three-phase on some trims.
-
Nissan Townstar EV: up to 11kW AC (three-phase) and 22kW on higher trims.
Rapid DC charging is also supported, with:
-
Nissan Leaf (2018 onwards): 50kW CHAdeMO.
-
Nissan Ariya: up to 130kW CCS.
-
Nissan Townstar EV: up to 80kW CCS.
Which Charging Cable Should I Choose?
The best cable depends on how and where you charge your Nissan EV:
-
Home charging: a 32A single-phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable (7.4kW) is perfect for overnight charging from a home wall box.
-
Public charging & flexibility: a 32A three-phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable (22kW) ensures you can take full advantage of faster workplace and public chargers, even if your Nissan maxes out at 7.4kW or 11kW.
-
Cable Lengths: 5m cables are ideal for driveways or garages where your EV is close to the charger. Whereas, 7m, 10m and 15m cables are great for on-street charging or hard to reach parking setups.
