Which charging cable should I get for my Tesla Model 3?

Wanting to check which is the best choice of charging cable for your Tesla Model 3? We at EV Wired are happy to offer some guidance.

Like most recent electric vehicle models, the Tesla Model 3 has a CCS Type 2 charge socket and, as such, requires a (16A or 32A) Type 2 to Type 2 charge cable for general charging.

This seven-pin Type 2 plug is the standard connector type within the EU and UK, and can be used at nearly all public charge points within the UK. You will find, however, two additional larger pins at the bottom of the Model 3's charge port: these are used for AC rapid charging, which can be done at specialised Tesla Supercharger and Destination charger networks. The cables needed for this rapid AC charging are tethered to charge points at these stations. Though not as common as other AC charging networks, these Tesla stations are rapidly expanding and we highly recommend using them where you can for an incredibly fast top-up!

Tesla Model 3 vehicle models have a 7.2kW maximum charge rate when charged using a 32A single-phase supply (the standard supply for UK and EU homes). The maximum charge rate increases to 11kW if using a 16A 3-phase supply (the standard in service stations, work buildings, supermarkets etc).

Whether you choose to use a 16A or 32A charger cable, your vehicle's onboard circuitry will automatically charge at the rate determined by the cable and charging station. You can, for example, use the same EV Wired 32A cable at both 16A and 32A charge points. Similarly, you can use a 16A cable at both 16A and 32A charge points.

In Europe, most household electricity supplies are single-phase, so for home charging only a single-phase 32A cable is necessarily required. However, purchasing a 32A 3-phase charger cable has a host of benefits: it gives you the option to use speedier 3-phase public charge points and, as the number of these charging networks increases, is future-proof as well as handy.
