Like most recent electric vehicle models, the Porsche range of electric vehicles have a CCS Type 2 charge socket and, as such, requires a (16A or 32A) Type 2 to Type 2 charge cable for general charging.
A Type 2 plug design is the EU standard connector type for electric vehicles and is compatible with practically all public charge points within the UK (bar Tesla-specific charge points). Beneath your vehicle's 7-pinned Type 2 socket, two additional larger pins are located: these are for use with CCS rapid DC charging cables, rather than general Type 2 charging. You'll find CCS cables tethered at certain 3-phase charging stations. These are great to use when you get the chance, as they charge your vehicle at a super-fast rate.
Porsche models have a 7.2kW maximum charge rate when charged using a 32A single-phase supply (the standard supply for UK and EU homes). The maximum charge rate increases to 11kW if using a 32A 3-phase supply (the standard in service stations, work buildings, supermarkets etc).
Whether you choose to use a 16A or 32A charger cable, your vehicle's onboard circuitry will automatically charge at the rate determined by the cable and charging station. You can, for example, use the same EV Wired 32A cable at both 16A and 32A charge points. Similarly, you can use a 16A cable at both 16A and 32A charge points.
In Europe, most household electricity supplies are single-phase, so for home charging only a single-phase 32A cable is necessarily required. However, purchasing a 32A 3-phase charger cable has a host of benefits: it gives you the option to use speedier 3-phase public charge points and, as the number of these charging networks increases, is future-proof as well as handy.
