Nissan Leaf Charging Cable Guide
The Nissan Leaf is one of the most popular electric vehicles in the UK and is recognised and admired globally. As one of the pioneers of modern EVs, both Nissan and its most famous model have become synonymous with the progression and transition towards a future of electric vehicles. The commercial success of the first Leaf, released in 2012 led to the subsequent development of newer versions. With upgrades to battery capacity and range along with decreased charging times, each adaptation has proved to be more impressive than the last while still retaining the charm of the original Leaf that was so popular.
What cable do I need for a Nissan Leaf?
The earliest version of the Nissan Leaf uses a Type 1 - Type 2 connection, however newer models released after 2018 have a Type 2 - Type 2 connection instead. Although it is important to select the correct cable for your specific vehicle, home and public charging points all use a Type 2 connector. This means that all EVs are compatible, ensuring that you will always be able to find a charging point you can use, no matter where you are.
Over many years of improvement and innovation, the maximum charge rate of the Leaf has steadily increased from 3.6kW in the 2012-2015, 2015-2017 & 2018 models to 6.6kW in the 2019 and successive versions. In addition to being able to use home and public charge points, all Nissan Leafs are able to use rapid charge points to charge up to speeds of 100kW.
Nissan Leaf charging speed and range
The gradual improvements made to Nissan Leaf over time can be best demonstrated when considering range after a full charge. The oldest Leaf model (2012), for instance, has a range of around 80 miles compared with 200 miles on the latest Nissan Leaf 3.ZERO e+. Such a jump is certainly impressive, yet despite the difference, it is clear that every model has the range to remain a workable option for almost any driver.
Charging times are relatively similar across the different models which is another impressive feat of the Leaf considering the significant increases in battery capacity. A full charge will take between 8-10 hours which makes overnight charging ideal.
Why purchase an EVwired cable?
Each cable is made from polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), a remarkably durable and weather-resistant material. Because of this, our cables boast an IP55 rating due to the exceptional protection provided against dust and water. There is therefore no need to panic if your cable gets caught outside or if the weather turns when you’re away from the house.
Furthermore, almost all EVwired cables are available in two different versions, straight and coiled. Straight cables are simple and easy to use, and as they are less compact they are better suited to take advantage of the full length of the cable. Nevertheless, some situations require an extra bit of manoeuvrability and so, if you are dealing with tight spaces around your charge point then our coiled cables are an excellent choice.
For customers who are in need of something longer than the standard 5 metre lead our Type 2 - Type 2 cables are also available in 7 metre and 10 metre versions.
We have great confidence in the cables that we offer and to demonstrate this each purchase comes with a 5-year warranty. In addition to this, our UK based support is ready to help with any queries or questions that you may have.
